The Spring Festival is the biggest and most important traditional festival in China. Not only for people to get together with their families, their friends, but also offers the time and space for people to relax themselves.

Traditionally, the Chinese celebrate the Spring Festival in the following ways:

Spring Purchasing: people begin preparing for the New Year’s purchases. This is called "Seeing the New Year in". Everybody goes out to purchase necessities for the New Year. Materials not only include different kinds of goods and foods, but also various decorations装饰装潢, new clothes and shoes for the children as well as gifts for the elderly, friends and relatives, are all on the list of purchasing.

扫尘 Sweeping the Dust。“Dust” is homophonic同音的,谐音 with “chen”(尘)in Chinese, which means old and past. In this way, “sweeping the dust” before the Spring Festival means a thorough cleaning of houses to sweep away bad luck in the past year. This custom shows a good wish of putting away old things to welcome a new life. In a word, just before the Spring Festival comes, every household will give a thorough cleaning to bid farewell to the old year and usher in the new.

Spring Decorating装饰(大红灯笼和倒福字): some people will hang two big red lanterns outside both sides of the front door of their houses. New Year's Feast: Spring Festival is a time for family reunion. People attach great importance to Spring Festival Eve. At that time, all family members eat dinner together. People from north and south have different sayings about the food they eat on this special day. The meal is more luxurious than usual. Dishes such as chicken, fish and bean curd can be excluded, for in Chinese, their pronunciations, respectively "ji", "yu" and "doufu" mean auspiciousness, abundance and richness. Southern Chinese eat “niangao" (New Year cake made of glutinous rice flour) on this occasion, because as a homophone, niangao means "higher and higher every year". In northern China, a traditional dish for the feast is "Jiaozi" or dumplings shaped like a crescent moon.

The Spring Festival Gala: After the dinner, the whole family will sit together, chatting, playing cards, computer games and watching TV. In recent years, the Spring Festival Gala broadcast on China Central Television Station (CCTV) is essential entertainment for the Chinese both at home and abroad. Lighting Firecrackers爆竹,鞭炮: Lighting Firecrackers is to be one of the most important customs in the Spring Festival celebration. People thought the spluttering sound could help drive away evil spirits. Right as the clock strike 12 o'clock midnight of New Year's Eve, cities and towns are lit up with the glitter from fireworks, and the sound can be deafening and lively.

Lucky Money: It is the money given to kids from their parents and grandparents as New Year gift. The money is believed to bring good luck, ward off 避开挡住 monsters怪物or unfortunate; hence因此 the name// lucky money". Parents and grandparents first put money in small, especially made red envelope and give to their kids after the New Year's Feast. It is one of the kids’favorite things in Spring Festival.

On New Year’s Day, for breakfast, People in northern China will eat jiaozi, or dumplings, Southern Chinese eat niangao on this occasion. In addition, people exchange greetings, gifts and chat leisurely.

Spring festival is what the kids look forward to… they may have free time from studying, they may have many nice foods to eat, they may have new clothes to wear, they may have chance to see their relatives and friends… Whatever they do during the spring festival, parents would give them extra and special favor, even if they do something wrong, parents would not scold them during this festival… They can get some small money from parents, grandparents and other relatives on the Spring Festival Eve as a gift. However ,there are many differences between Spring festival and Christmas day. There are special Christmas services in Christian churches all over the world However, compared with the Christmas, Spring Festival has nothing to do with the religion as most festival does, but is derive from several old folklores or legends of ancient China.
