Meanwhile, up in heaven, the Emperor missed the beautiful skies once woven by his seventh daughter. He ordered his daughter's grandmother to find her and bring her back to him. As the seventh princess was flying to heaven with her grandmother, the cowherd put on his old ox's hide (which he preserved after the animal had died long ago) and put their children into two bamboo baskets laced with his wife's magical fairy clothes to chase after his love.
But the grandmother created a milky way in the sky with her hairpin, which kept the lovers apart. The seventh princess moved to the star Vega (The Swooping Eagle) in the Lyra (Harp) constellation. And the cowherd and their two children stayed on the star Altair (Flying One) in the Aquila (Eagle) constellation.
The seventh day of the seventh lunar month is China's Valentine's day. It was said that the daughter of the God of Heaven visited the earth. Her name was Zhinü and she met Niulang. They fell in love with each other soon. The got married secretly and they were very happy. When the Goddess of Heaven knew that her daughter was married to a human, she became very angry and order Zhinü to return to the heaven. NiuLang tried to follow her, but the river of stars stopped him.
Finding her daughter was very sad, the Goddess of Heaven finally decided to let the couple cross the Milky Way to meet once a year. Magpies make a bridge of their wings so the couple can cross the river to meet on the day.

牛郎父母早逝，跟着哥嫂度日。嫂子马氏为人狠毒，牛郎忠厚常受虐待。一年秋天，嫂子逼他去放牛，给他九头牛，却让他等有了十头牛时才能回家，牛郎无奈只好赶着牛出了村。
牛郎独自一人赶着牛进了山，在草深林密的山上，他坐在树下伤心，不知道何时才能赶着十头牛回家。这时，有位须发皆白的老人出现在他的面前，问他为何伤心，当得知他的遭遇后，笑着对他说：“别难过，在伏牛山里有一头病倒的老牛，你去好好喂养它，等老牛病好以后，你就可以赶着它回家了。”
牛郎翻山越岭，走了很远的路，终于找到了那头有病的老牛，他看到老牛病得厉害，就去给老牛打来一捆捆草，一连喂了三天，老牛吃饱了，才抬起头告诉他：自己本是天上的灰牛大仙，因触犯了天规被贬下天来，摔坏了腿，无法动弹。自己的伤需要用百花的露水洗一个月才能好。牛郎不畏辛苦，细心地照料了老牛一个月，白天为老牛采花接露水治伤，晚上依偎在老年身边睡觉，到老牛病好后，牛郎高高兴兴赶着十头牛回了家。
回家后，嫂子对他仍旧不好，曾几次要加害于他，都被老牛设法相救，嫂子最后恼羞成怒把牛郎赶出家门，牛郎只要了那头老牛相随。 后来老牛给他出了一计，要他娶织女为妻。到了那一天，美丽的仙女们果然到银河沐浴，并在水中嬉戏。这时藏在芦苇中的牛郎突然跑出来拿走了织女的衣裳。惊惶失措的仙女们急忙上岸穿好衣裳飞走了，唯独剩下织女。在牛郎的恳求下，织女答应做他的妻子。婚后，牛郎织女男耕女织，情深意重，相亲相爱，他们生了一儿一女，一家人生活得十分幸福美满。
一天老牛告诉牛郎，当它要死去的时候，叮嘱牛郎要把它的皮留下来，到急难之时披上以求帮助。老牛死后，夫妻俩忍痛剥下牛皮，把牛埋在山坡上。
但是好景不长。织女和牛郎成亲的事被天庭的玉帝和王母娘娘知道后，他们勃然大怒，并命令天神下界强行抓走织女，恩爱夫妻被活活拆散。牛郎回家不见织女，拉着一对儿女，急忙披上牛皮，腾云驾雾追去。眼看就要追上，岂知王母娘娘心中一急，拔下头上的金簪向银河一划，昔日清浅的银河，霎间变得波涛汹涌的天河，牛郎再也过不去了。从此，牛郎织女只能泪眼盈盈，隔河相望。他们的忠贞爱情感动了喜鹊，千万只喜鹊飞来，搭成鹊桥，让牛郎织女走上鹊桥相会。王母娘娘对此也无奈，只好准许两人在每年七月七日于鹊桥相会。
后来，每到农历七月初七，就是牛郎织女鹊桥相会的日子。姑娘们都会来到花前月下，抬头仰望星空，寻找银河两边的牛郎星和织女星，希望能看到他们一年一度的相会，乞求上天能让自己也象织女那样心灵手巧，祈祷自己能有如意称心的美满婚姻，由此形成了七夕节。
